“The sad truth is that opportunity doesn’t knock twice. You can put things off until tomorrow but tomorrow may never come. Where will you be a few years down the line. Will it be everything you dreamed of. We seal our fate with the choices we take, but don’t give a second thought to the chances we take. “ Estefan, Gloria
It has been a grueling 6 months since we first inspected the potential location for our new restaurant venture in Melbourne.
Armed with big dreams, strong determination, high hopes, never-ending supports from family and loved ones and only X amount of cash we embarked on a journey to open our second hospitality venture in Melbourne. So far… It has been a Journey with Capital “J” and exclamation marks (!!!).
Where to begin… Let’s start from the fact that although it is a two-storey building, the previous tenant had decided to remove the stairs to access level 1 altogether. Then came the horror of knowing that the condition of the upper level was quiet ancient, the need to replace or upgrade every single utilities / facilities to make it restaurant ready, the strict requirement by the councils, the builders that despite every single effort to make it a smooth project – always met a setback, the feng-shui master who indicated that he is uncertain about the yin and yang of the building after we finalized the contract and the list could go on and on. So many times my business partner and I felt like running all the way home and promise never to lease a strange old building ever again.
However, enough with the weeping! Because big girls don’t cry.
The challenge in transforming an old building into a restaurant is only half of the story. The biggest challenge is ‘getting the planets to align correctly’; pulling together all of the elements in turning the restaurant concept into a successful and profitable business model. The basic truth of the restaurant industry is – The business is a hard work and to be successful you need to have a great passion, a solid plan, be tenacious and trust me … you also need luck. On top of that, it is inherently important to find the right people at the right place and time. Fully committed staff, great dream team is the back bone of any restaurant business.
So far, we are humbled and grateful to announce that the grand opening day of FOMO THAI Restaurant will be on the 21st of March 2013. Just like our first restaurant venture, the journey hasn’t been easy and at times it could be like a roller coaster ride. We are excited and anxious at the same time. We are ready to embrace the uncertainties and obstacles ahead and hoping that we could endure any upcoming challenges to the best of our ability. There would be a time when we have to stand up and scream, “Enough! I can’t possibly take it anymore.” But there would also be a time when we looked back and reflect that the exhilaration and the up and down of the roller coaster ride were the most memorable part of the journey.
Inspired by relaxed, informal, everyday kind of dining place that is common in Bangkok’s urban culture, we are proud to launch FOMO THAI Restaurant in Melbourne. FOMO THAI is all about – “Eat, Drink, Unwind”. Our philosophy is to offer a sharing-style simple authentic Thai cuisine in FOMO THAI’s modest yet modern décor. We believe that Food is not only for your senses to savor; Food is a reason for Celebration, where friends and family gather together to indulge over delicious dishes and to have a good quality time.
It has been an interesting beginning to a Journey and the continuation of this journey is going to get even more interesting from here onwards. Just remember… when you embarked on any journey, don’t forget to spare your time to Eat, Drink and Unwind at FOMO THAI.
